Libertad, 200 Years of Colombia’s Independence is the first strategy game that reconstructs the history of Colombia’s independence. It’s your turn to fight for freedom! This is a real-time strategy (RTS) video game in which you can command different units with the help of maps and action indicators. Since it takes you through Colombia’s road to independence, the campaigns feature Simón Bolívar, Manuela Beltrán, Camilo Torres, Francisco de Paula Santander, Antonio Ricaurte, and other figures who played key roles in the events and battles that led to the liberation of Nueva Granada and the birth of Gran Colombia.

The objective? It depends on the section, the campaign, and the interests at stake in the revolution: from leading a set number of citizens from one place to another, escaping the siege of the Spanish army, and finding the best route to the goal; to helping the promising officer Bolívar train combat troops and free the outskirts of Cartagena from royalist guerrillas; all the way to winning the Battle of Cúcuta, defending the Hacienda de San Mateo, unifying the plains guerrillas, helping Santander hold off the Spanish expeditionary forces, commanding the army at the Pantano de Vargas, and fighting in the Battle of Boyacá.

Achieving victory means unifying a dream, winning independence, and shouting freedom!

This project, however, remained a demo, since unfortunately funding could never be secured for its full development.

Cartagena — the walled city —, key locations in what are now the Colombian departments of Norte de Santander and Boyacá, as well as present-day Venezuela, are the settings in which Libertad unfolds. Through 2D and 3D elements, interactive experiences, and narratives that are so close to our history yet, at times, so far from our knowledge, this video game seeks to be a way to understand and relive the events, circumstances, and contexts in which our freedom was forged.

Libertad is made up of four main sections, some of which have subsections that will guide you through the key moments of Colombia’s independence.

In Comuneros, the game’s first stage, you’ll learn to interact with characters, select squads, move around the map, and attack enemy units, among other features.

The transitions between sections include animations explaining the recreated moment and its historical significance. In addition, as an appendix, Libertad includes a library with information about each historical event, its characters, and the corresponding maps to help you follow the campaigns and geographic references.
